"The Selective Service has a budget of $24 million and a full-time staff of 130. It maintains a database of about 17 million potential male draftees."Men between the ages 18 and 25 are to register online or by mail. Those who do not could possibly be charged with a felony. However, the Justice Department has not enforced that law since 1988. However, in this day and age, failure to register can result in loss of financial aid, denial of U.S citizen ship and refusal of employment with the federal government. There have been quite a few attempts to rid the Selective Service System but it failed. Representative, Peter DeFazio says it doesn't make any sense to threaten or penalize men who do not register due to the fact that the odd of a draft happening are slim to none. Many at Capitol Hill believe that the removal of the Selective Service System will make them look weak on national security.
I personally feel as though the Selective Service System should be removed. The chances of a draft happening is quite low. The money that they are wasting towards a draft that might never happen could go towards education, health care and much more. They are more worried about their reputation than the well being of their citizens. America has more than enough resources and many trained troops that can help out in worse case scenario.
