Obama Signs Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization

President Obama signed an updated version of the 1994 Violence Against Women Act this past Thursday. The act promotes state and local efforts to combat domestic violence and rape. It will also extend new protection to Native American women, lesbians, and gays. Over $660 Million has been provided to provide legal assistance, counseling, and hotlines to victims of rape and domestic violence. These resources will allow those victims to feel as though they have someone or something to seek help from in their time of desperation.
"All women deserve the right to live free from fear," the president said in his remarks before signing the bill. "That’s what today is about."
Not only did this law change and update the rules, it made it a lot easier for people to speak up. It make it possible for Americans o address issues such as domestic violence and rape and with hopes making changes. As a country, I feel as though we need to be more vocal with our opinion if we want to see changes. Domestic violence and rape are not "new" crimes. These crimes have been a national issue for many, many years. There are a great amount of programs out there to help victims and bring awareness, however, this time around they should be more effective. The rape and domestic violence rates have declined significantly over the years. With the new rules and resources, hopefully within the next few years they will decline even more.
