Governor of North Dakota Signs Bill Allowing Armed Teachers in Classrooms

Governor Dennis Daugaard of South Dakota signed a bill last Friday which allows teachers to carry guns in classrooms. South Dakota is the first state to enforce such a law since the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.  The bill was highly supported by gun-rights supporters who believed that arming teachers and other school personel could possibly prevent tragedies such as the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. This law will be in full effect come July 1st. Other states such as Georgia and Texas are also considering signing a bill that allows armed teachers on school grounds as well.

Although the idea behind arming teachers may sound beneficial to schools, many teachers and school administrators oppose it. They feel as though it could do more harm than help. Brining guns into schools could possibly result in accidental shootings and it could also send out the wrong message to the children who attend the school. However, Daugaard is considering the fact that many small towns do not have enough money to hire armed guards to work full time at the schools, therefore he feels as though arming teachers and other authorized personell would be the best way to go.

Many factors need to be considered and thought about as far as bringing guns into schools goes. The safety of the students is obviously the first priority. Imagine if a teacher gets angry one day and decides to threaten their students with a gun. That could cause a lot of controversy. I personally feel as though armed guards should be the only ones allowed to carry guns during school. Other safety options should be considered and thought about in deep depth.
